1. Portable speaker for video conferencing
Home office or even a trip – communication is often everything, and nothing is more annoying than when the technology plays tricks on you. Poly, a specialist in conference equipment, has developed the Calisto 5300 for this purpose. The handy disc, almost eleven centimeters in diameter and a good two centimeters high, contains a loudspeaker, microphones and a rechargeable battery, so that it can also be operated without a power supply. A USB cable for connection to a computer is also integrated. The portable conference loudspeaker is designed to put an end to sound problems at conferences, even when you’re not in the office. And the little thing does its job quite well.
Big installation orgies are not necessary to put the Calisto into operation, either you connect it via Bluetooth to a mobile phone or laptop, which works without any problems. Or you can use the built-in USB cable, which can be stowed away in the device to save space. There are two cable versions of Calisto: One comes with the large USB-A connector, the other with the superior, but not yet so widely used USB-C. There is also a variant in which a small UPS Bluetooth stub is included. Most laptops today can handle Bluetooth and therefore no longer need an external wireless adapter. The connection via the small adapter is more stable.
In addition to the loudspeaker, there are only four other buttons on the surface of the Calisto: Loud / quiet, microphone off and the telephone button that can be used to accept calls. The built-in microphones can pick up calls from a distance, but it shouldn’t be more than two or three meters, otherwise the quality will be too poor. The suppression of background noise is also on board. It worked well in our tests. The battery lasts up to 16 hours and conveniently charges directly from the USB cable.
2. Withings smartwatch with analog display
The problem with many smartwatches: If you don’t feel like wearing a small computer on your wrist, you have to search a long time. Fossil has some nice models, and so does Garmin. Withings is now launching the Scan watch, one of the most beautiful smart watches with the look of a classic chronograph. The French particularly emphasize the health functions – the Scan watch alone is not quite convincing here.
Whitings was part of Nokia for a short time, but has been self-employed again for two years. In addition to scales, blood pressure monitors, thermometers and a sleep tracker, the portfolio also includes watches. The Scan watch advertises Withings as “the most advanced health wearable on the market”. The watch measures the pulse and the number of steps, of course, to do this it wants to recognize the risk of atrial fibrillation, it can also record a single-channel EKG (electrocardiogram). It also records pauses in breathing during sleep and the oxygen saturation in the blood. Many of the functions have been clinically tested, the manufacturer assures.
In the test, however, the health values can only convince to a limited extent. Sleep monitoring, for example, stops immediately when you wake up at night – and is therefore not suitable for users with sleep disorders. Of all things. The apnea detection provides different results than the sleep tracker Sleep, also from Withings. The pulse is only measured every ten minutes – but the Scan watch’s battery lasts up to 30 days. However, Fitbit and Garmin, for example, continuously monitor the heart.
Still, the Scan watch is worth a look. In the past, Withings has continuously improved its own products with updates.
The Whitings app is now really good, gives tips and, if desired, even creates a health report for the family doctor, which can be printed out. After all, the design is pleasing: the bright, circular OLED display below the 12 o’clock position is hardly noticeable, especially on the dark dial. It only lights up when necessary and then shows smartphone messages, for example. For 280 euros in the 38-millimeter and 300 in the 42-millimeter version, you can get a chic smartwatch with health functions – that looks like a watch, not a computer.
3. Bluetooth headphones
Either a big pair of overhead headphones or a small pair or earbuds that use Bluetooth to connect to your devices will be very useful to you! You will be able to go for a run or a walk without having cables on your way, you can wear only one earbud while doing other things or while working so that you can answer calls or listen to music without being distracted!
